You're in good hands

GuardDex checks every link you click for scams, fake websites, and phishing attacks — before they can steal your information.

🔍
What GuardDex does for you

Phishing scams are fake websites designed to look exactly like your bank, the IRS, or a store you trust. The goal is to trick you into typing your password or personal information. GuardDex catches these before you ever see them.

🔗 Checks every link

Before a page loads, GuardDex scans the web address against a database of known scams and suspicious patterns.

🔔 Warns you before you tap

When a suspicious link arrives in a text or notification, GuardDex warns you before you open it.

🚫 Blocks known scam pages

High-risk pages are stopped completely. You see a clear warning screen instead of the fake website.

🧹 Removes ad trackers

Advertising companies that follow you around the internet are blocked automatically — you're less tracked everywhere.

📱
Setting up the Android app

Step 1 — Install the app

Your admin will send you the GuardDex app or help you install it. Once it's on your phone, look for the shield icon 🛡️ in your app drawer.

Step 2 — Connect to your server

GuardDex needs to know where your family's security server is. The easiest way is a QR code your admin provides:

  1. 1
Your admin will show you a QR code — usually on a screen or printed out.
  2. 2
Open your phone camera and point it at the QR code. A notification will appear — tap it.
  3. 3
GuardDex opens and says "Connected!" — you're all set.
No QR code? You can also type the server address manually. Ask your admin for the address — it looks like http://192.168.1.100:8088 — and enter it on the setup screen.

Step 3 — Turn on notification scanning

This lets GuardDex check links in your text messages, emails, and other app notifications before you tap them.

  1. 1
Go to Settings on your Android phone.
  2. 2
Tap Apps, then Special app access, then Notification access.
(The exact path depends on your phone brand — Samsung, Pixel, etc.)
  3. 3
Find GuardDex in the list and turn it On.
  4. 4
Tap Allow on the confirmation prompt.
What this does GuardDex quietly runs in the background. When a link arrives in a message or notification, it checks the link before you even see it. If something is dangerous, you get a warning notification first.

Step 4 — Set as your default browser (optional but recommended)

When GuardDex is your default browser, every link you tap anywhere on your phone opens through the security scanner first.

  1. 1
Go to Settings → Apps → Default apps → Browser app.
  2. 2
Select GuardDex Browser from the list.
🎨
Understanding the shields — what each color means

GuardDex uses colored shields to tell you whether a page is safe. Here's exactly what each one means and what you should do:

Green — Safe
GuardDex checked this page and found no signs of a scam or phishing attack. The page loaded normally.
✓ Go ahead — you're safe
⚠️
Yellow — Warning
Something about this page looks suspicious — it might be trying to copy a real website. GuardDex isn't certain it's dangerous, but it wants you to be careful.
⚠ Read the warning, then decide
🚫
Red — Blocked
GuardDex is confident this is a scam, fake website, or phishing page. The page has been stopped to protect you. Do not type any passwords or personal information.
✗ Tap "Go Back" — do not proceed
🔄
Blue — Scanning
GuardDex is checking the link right now. This usually takes less than a second. The page will load (or be blocked) as soon as the check is done.
… Just wait — it only takes a moment
⚠️
When you see a yellow warning

A yellow warning screen means GuardDex noticed something suspicious but isn't 100% certain it's a scam. You'll see a screen like this:

⚠️

Warning — This page looks suspicious

GuardDex noticed patterns that are common on fake websites. The page may be trying to copy a real bank, store, or government website.

You'll see two buttons: "Go Back — You're Safe" and "Proceed Anyway"

What to do on a yellow screen

  1. 1
Read the warning message. It will say what looks suspicious — for example, "Possible Bank of America phishing page."
  2. 2
If you weren't expecting to visit this site: tap "Go Back". This is the safe choice.
  3. 3
If you clicked a link you trust (like from your own bookmark): tap "Proceed Anyway" — but don't enter a password unless the web address looks exactly right.
When in doubt, go back. If you weren't expecting the page and it's asking for a password or personal information, always choose "Go Back." You can always get to the real website by typing the address yourself.
🚫
When a page is blocked

A red blocked screen means GuardDex is highly confident this is a dangerous or fake website. You will not be able to see the page — and that's a good thing.

🚫

Blocked — GuardDex stopped this page

GuardDex detected a known scam or phishing page and blocked it before it could load. Your personal information is safe.

What to do on a red screen

  1. 1
Tap "Go Back — You're Safe". You're done — GuardDex handled it.
  2. 2
Do not try to get around the block or type the address manually.
  3. 3
If you received the link in a message, do not reply to the sender and consider letting your admin know.
  4. 4
If you think it was a mistake (you know this is a safe site), contact your admin. They can review it.
If you already entered a password before GuardDex blocked it Change your password for that account immediately — on the real website. Contact your admin so they can check what happened.
🧩
The browser extension (Chrome & Firefox)

If you use a computer, the GuardDex browser extension brings the same protection to Chrome or Firefox. Your admin will install it for you, or you can install it yourself in a few steps.

What the extension does

🛡️ Scans every page

A small shield appears briefly while it checks. Green means safe, yellow means suspicious, red means blocked.

🚫 Blocks ads and trackers

Advertising companies that follow you around the web are blocked — pages load faster too.

🌑 Dark mode

One click in the toolbar turns any website dark. Easy on the eyes, especially at night.

🔒 Forces secure connections

If a site supports HTTPS (secure), GuardDex upgrades your connection automatically — even if you typed the address without https://.

The toolbar badge

After the extension checks a page, a small badge appears on the GuardDex shield icon in your browser toolbar:

Green check — This page is safe
! Yellow ! — Something looks suspicious — click the icon to see why
Red ✗ — This page was blocked
Blue dots — Scanning in progress
How to check you're protected
🛡️

You're protected when…

The GuardDex app is installed, connected to your server, and you tap links through it. The more of these you have active, the better your protection.

✓ Fully protected

GuardDex app installed, notification access granted, set as default browser, browser extension installed on your computer.

~ Partially protected

App installed but not set as default browser — links from other apps won't go through GuardDex. Notification access not granted — no pre-tap warnings.

✗ Not protected

App not installed, can't reach the server, or notification access denied. Contact your admin for help.

Quick check Open the GuardDex app and look for the green "Connected" status on the home screen. If it says "Cannot reach server," let your admin know.

Your account

Log in at /dashboard/login.html and visit your Profile page to access these features.

Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

Add an extra layer of security to your account. After setting up 2FA, logging in will ask for a 6-digit code from your authenticator app in addition to your password.

  1. 1
Open your Profile and find the Two-Factor Authentication section.
  2. 2
Tap Set Up 2FA — a QR code appears.
  3. 3
Scan the QR code with your authenticator app (Google Authenticator, Authy, Bitwarden Authenticator, etc.).
  4. 4
Enter the 6-digit code from the app to confirm setup.
Recommended apps Google Authenticator (iOS/Android), Authy (cloud backup), or Bitwarden Authenticator (open source). Any TOTP-compatible app works.

You can download a copy of all your GuardDex data at any time — scan history, alerts, notification settings, and breach check history — as a single JSON file.

Go to Profile → Export My Data → Download.

Security report

Generate a printable summary of your protection activity over the past 30 days. Includes URL scans, alerts received, breach check status, and notification history.

Go to Profile → Security Report → Generate Report. The report opens in a new tab ready to print or save as a PDF.

Delete your account

If you want to permanently remove your account and all your data from GuardDex, you can do this from your Profile. This action is permanent and cannot be undone.

  1. 1
Go to Profile → Delete Account.
  2. 2
    Enter your current password.
  3. 3
Type DELETE MY ACCOUNT exactly as shown to confirm.
This cannot be undone. All your scan history, alerts, notification settings, and breach check data will be permanently deleted. Your admin cannot recover this data after deletion.
Common questions
Why does a page show "Scanning…" before it loads?
GuardDex is doing a quick safety check — usually less than a second. It checks the web address against a database of known scams before showing you the page. This is normal and is how GuardDex protects you.
A page I use every day was blocked — what do I do?
Contact your admin (see below). They can check whether it was a mistake and, if so, add that address to the safe list. Don't try to get around the block yourself.
I got a warning notification about a link — I didn't even tap it yet. How?
That's notification scanning working correctly. A link arrived in one of your apps (maybe a text message or email), GuardDex checked it automatically, and warned you before you tapped. You can safely ignore the link.
The app says "Cannot reach server." What does that mean?
The GuardDex app can't find the security server. This usually happens when you're away from home and not connected to the home network. Check that you're on the right Wi-Fi, or let your admin know.
Is GuardDex reading all my messages?
No. The notification access permission lets GuardDex see the link addresses (URLs) in notifications — not the content of your messages. It only scans addresses, never reads or stores your message text.
Do I need to do anything to keep GuardDex up to date?
No. Your admin maintains the server and pushes updates. The app on your phone updates through the Play Store when new versions are released. You don't need to configure anything.
Can GuardDex protect me on public Wi-Fi?
The scanning still works if your phone can reach the GuardDex server (e.g. via a VPN or if your admin has made it accessible from the internet). However, using public Wi-Fi without a VPN has other risks GuardDex can't fully cover — ask your admin about setting up a VPN.
